'What the World Needs Now Is Love' is a song made famous by Luther Vandross which was featured in this album called 'Songs' which was released in 1994. The song was originally recorded by Burt Bacharach and the Posies. The song has been covered by many other various artists such as Dionne Warwick, Wynonna Judd, Jackie Deshannon and Diana Ross among many other various artists. The song says that the world is losing out on love and love is what it really needs. There is a lot of hate and war that is being spread in the world. The world has got enough mountains, hills and fields and does not require more of them. The song is requesting God to shower the world with love.

"What the World Needs Now" was written the songwriting team of Hal David (lyrics) and Burt Bacharach (music).  It was originally recorded by Jackie DeShannon and released in April 1965.  It reached number 7 on the pop charts when it came out.

The song has been criticized for being naive and overly optimistic.  But there's a humanistic quality to the lyrics that make it very appealing, and the arrangement is grand and sweeping.

The song was originally written for Gene Pitney, who had recorded a number of Bacharach/David compositions.  He passed on it.  They later offered it to Dionne Warwick (another performer who had scored with songs by the duo), but she felt that it was too much of a "cowboy" song as presented to her.  Eventually, it was offered to DeShannon, although it was recorded with many of the musicians (including backup singers) who had worked on Dionne Warwick's songs.

Since then, it has been recorded and performed by a number of artists.
