The purpose of consciousness to tell and guide us about our present situation what is happening around us? Why it is happening? How can we conceive it? Etc. These are the all functions from which we learn. And that's why consciousness keeps evolving throughout the life due to exposure of new things and ideas. As Modern Psychology tells us.

Prevailing theories in neuroscience these days is that consciousness evolved as WE evolved - ie assume we started out as little stationary amoebas.  Food just floats past, and we just take it in - we don't need to move, think, interact.  Then, as we became more sophisticated, we developed a rudimentary nervous system - a basis 'swim line' like fish have today - to be able to work out which way is up.  Then we got more complicated again, and developed upright posture, hunting and gathering, community etc.  If you look at the corresponding brain and nervous system development that goes with this evolution, we go from swim line, to basic brainstem, to developing 'lateral lobes' - or what we refer to today as the hemispheres of the brain.  So consciousness itself is really only about why am I here, and what do I want to do about it.  We don't seem to have any evidence of consciousness of inanimate and even stationary objects - so perhaps you could argue that the development of consciousness is in fact an evolutionary trait to enable us to interpret and manipulate our environment to our advantage.  If we didn't need to move, we wouldn't need to think, and probably wouldn't know to care!  It's all about the nervous system!

My theory is that God made man with a conscious so he could have a created being that he could love who could choose by his own free will to love him in return,  he could have made us as robots but he wants to be loved freely by humans
