Alice in Chains is widely regarded as being one of the best bands to emerge during the Grunge era. The lineup consisted of Layne Staley on vocals, Jerry Cantrell on guitars, Mike Inez on bass, and Sean Kinney on drums. Their high levels of musicianship set them apart from most of the other grunge bands, but they were tied to the movement because of their Seattle origins, imagery, and morbidly introspective lyrics. They in fact owed more to heavy metal than to punk or 70s rock.

Though their music was hard and appealing to metal fans, it was their dark subject matter that put them in the forefront of the grunge movement. While this dichotomy helped them soar to multi-platinum status with the release of their second album, 1992's Dirt, it also created a lot of tensions within. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell had mainstream leanings, while vocalist Layne Staley had a fascination with the seamy underground. As a result the band was kept off the road for the rest of the 1990s and they never really realized their potential. There were also rumors about Lyne Staley's heroin addiction, fueled by the dark lyrics and content of the Dirt album, and the lack of public appearances.

Staley's death in April 2002 spelt the end of the band, but they have regrouped and done a number of concerts with William DuVall, filling in as vocalist.
