Not sure how GE's go, but Kenmore top-loaders have 2 screws (1 on each side) securing the control panel. Remove these two screws and lift up the control panel and flip it backwards - it will stay connected to the back panel on the washer. Separate the electrical connector with wires from the control panel to the lid switch. Then there are two clips, 1 on each side that hold the top lid to the back panel. These clips are removable simply by prying with a flat screwdriver. With these 2 clips removed, pull the top panel towards you, and you wind up removing three sides (left, front, & right) along with top panel (& lid) - all as one single unit. If you know what you're doing, it should only take a few minutes, and you'll have the tub exposed in the frame with only the back panel attached. Everything will be accessible to you then to inspect and repair. Hope this helps - Keith (Mech. Engr. By schooling).
