How Did Idaho Gets Its Name?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The State of Idaho is located towards the northwest region of USA. This state became part of the union on 3 July, 1890. It has a total area of 83,642 square miles which makes it the 14th largest state in United States. And it has a population of 1523816 which makes it the 39th largest state of US.

The origin of the name of this state is pretty much a conflict up til now. It was officially suggested in the year 1860 by George M Willing. According to him he got it from Shoshone language and it means something like sun from the mountain or gem of mountain. But he later admitted that he had made the name himself.

However, despite his denial, many historians trace the origin to a shoshone term called ee-da-how. Which means Behold! The sun is coming down the mountains.
