When Did Brian Clough Take Control Of Nottingham Forest?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Brian Clough took control of Nottingham Forest in the middle of the 1974-75 season, while the team where still playing in the old second division.  That season, Forest under Clough won only three of their seventeen league games, ending the season in seventh place.

The following season fared little better with the club finishing eighth.  Forest at least managed promotion the season following, after finishing third in the '76-77 season.

Amazingly, Clough led Forest to the first division title in his first attempt with Forest in England's top flight in the 77-78 season.

Then, the following season (seventy eight, seventy nine) perhaps even more amazingly Clough led the club to victory in the European cup (now Champions league), in the club's first ever attempt.

Clough then managed to win and retain the European cup the following season (seventy nine, eighty), sealing an unprecedented level of success for the Nottingham club.
