Being in a band at a young age in high school, the most intriguing instrument and the one that is hardest to master is the oboe. If your up for a challenge, try it.

    oboe ?
    the hardest to master?
    the word
    UNDER- STATEMENT,
    comes to mind, my friend

I would beg to differ with you, since I've been an oboist for much of my life - - and am now 61+ - - the word "master" - in regard to the oboe --
is at most minimal quite probably a LOGICAL FALLACY, since NOBODY EVER DOES .... the issue, my friend, is not that you "arrive" at some "destination", such as "mastery" of this thing, since I repeat, nobody ever really does, its just too darn hard - - and there's too much to learn - - the issue is, in a larger sense, that you would ENJOY THE RIDE while you're doing it ... it will be a faithful friend the rest of your life and you will meet the MOST INTERESTING people you can imagine, OTHER ARTISTS like yourself ...
do I encourage you, to pursue the OBOE ? Good Lord, yes, and START YOUNG, .. be prepared for many long months of just playing scales, and LONG TONES, to build your lips, your hand skills, coordination, your tone, control of dynamics and over all sound ..
is it HARD WORK ? you better believe it ! will you make a lot of money at it ?
    don't hold your breath ...
really, MORE IMPORTANT, is that you just WORK AT IT as hard as you can, and enjoy the ride ....
but if you want something wonderful in your life and you have the ear, much less the soul of tenderness , and the skills as a musician, then the melancholy wail of the darling double reed, is SO ! unique, and you just might find yourself, as I HAVE, in a symphony orchestra - - actually, not once, but TWICE, in the same town ...
hillsborosymphony.org, bcsym.org - -- check it out, if you like
get a good TEACHER, find a nice oboe - - - if you want some help in choosing a horn, send me an email, I'll be happy to advise and guide -
your LISTENING LIBRARY as an oboe enthusiast, should include works by all 9 symphonies of Beethoven, the later ones of Mozart, many of J Haydn, guys like Albinoni, Vivaldi has a LOT of oboe stuff, look in the SCHWANN CATALOG for works of OBOE CONCERTOS and small ensembles - - the best players have names like Holliger, John mack, ALan Vogel, plus others - - its a whole research topic, you can find out a lot about all of this stuff and LOTS MORE on YAHOO GROUPS, and at the IDRS website
all the best to you - - keep playing - - - G Davis Portland, Oregon USA

Oboe IS a woodwind instrument, but i prefer the flute it has a much more pleasing timbre, and i think because of the reed it is easier to maintain than an oboe or clarinet.

If you are located near my town, I'd be delighted for the chance to assist you in person - if not, then you are welcome to send me your questions in regards to an investment of your time and money in a GOOD OBOE  ....   Are they expensive ?  Well, that depends, it relates in part to your own resources, financial, otherwise, and to the level of interest, commitment, effort, yes ! HARD WORK !  That playing something like the oboe will require of you ...  It will also bring you many years of great joy if you really work at it, it has for me ...  And you will meet some of the most interesting new friends you can imagine, I did ...
Good oboe makers ?  Try LOREE, if you want the probable best, and can pay the prices; there are other makes around,  HOWARTH of London is really fine, MARIGAUX of Paris ditto,  FOX of USA is a good choice for less money - YAMAHA makes a decent mid-price instrument,  and there are others too many to list here, these are my pre-eminent choice names ...
How much do you think you can comfortably spend on such a thing?  When would you like to make the purchase ?  I can recommend a good dealer, where I got mine ...
Check me out, I'm at  hillsborosymphony.org, Principal oboe ... If I can help you, just drop me a line and let me know,  Gordon Davis  bkesl @ hotmail.com
