I seem to remember having problems with HP printers if the printer is connected to the PC while installing the drivers. Make sure you have the latest vista drivers from www.hp.com and leave the printer disconnected. Do not use the windows "Add printer", run the downloaded .exe file. At some point in the installation you will be instructed to connect the printer.

Hope this also applies to your printer.
