Richard Harris was the first Dumbledore. He died on 25th October 2002 at age of 72. He was suffering from Hodgkin's disease.He played Dumbledore in first two Harry Potter movies.
According to Richard, he wasn't going to accept the role of Dumbledore because of his bad health but he accepted the role because of his 10 year old Grand daughter. His grand daughter threatened him of not talking to him ever, if he didn't accpeted the role.
Richard, in an interview, said that he fears that his acting in Dumbledore might outshine his whole career. And, if we analyze our surroundings, then we can see that Younger generation only remembers him as Dumbledore.
After Richard Harris, the role of Dumbledore was taken by Michael Gambon.
