Write out a budget of your monthly bills. Take your monthly income and "assign" every dollar a place on the budget. Your first priority is housing, utilities, and food--survival items. Next is transportation and job-related costs like required clothing. Continue working your way through your list of bills, prioritizing along the way.

After the bare necessities are paid for, look for what you can cut. Do you have cable, home internet access, a larger cell phone plan than you need?

Look for things you can sell on Ebay, shop at Goodwill (if you try the "nice" part of town, you'll find brand-new brand-name clothing), clip coupons.

Every dollar that doesn't get a name on the bare necessities list goes first toward paying any debt you may have, then into savings. Your goal is to have at least one thousand dollars in savings (it may take more than a year), and then try for an amount equal to six months of your current salary. It's a cushion if you get laid off, sick, whatever.

Have you had your home checked for energy efficiency? Now that I know it's not a debt problem, there's lots of home efficiency tips, too. Washing laundry in cold water saves on your energy bill (the Tide detergent for cold water was rated well by Consumer Reports) Many companies will give you a free inspection of your insulation, windows, doors, etc. To see if you're 'leaking' heat/air conditioning. My electric company even gave rebates for improving our attic insulation-that's the first place I'd start. We keep our water heater turned to 120, with a $20 blanket on it (found at Home Depot) that insulates it. Even if your water heater is in a part of the house that gets heat/AC, a blanket keeps the water inside hotter longer so it turns on less often. A programmable thermostat is a cheap ($20-50) way to make sure your system is only running when you need it, not when you're at work.

Make a list of groceries, supplies etc. Then only make one trip to store a week or better yet a month to save on gas. Grow your own veggies. Shop at a thrift or consignment store. Sometimes these stores have things other than clothes, also take the clothes that you and your family don't wear anymore or to them. Have a yard sell. Car pool. Eat at home and rent movies instead of dinner and a movie. Hope some of these ideas help.

Most products we buy (food, make-up, house hold cleaners, etc.) have websites on their packaging; go to their websites to see if they have customer promos they send out; if you get on their mailing list you may get free samples or coupons for their products. Don't forget to register with those free coupon sites for more savings and checking your Sunday papers for deals and coupons. Go to the library for books and videos. Get a programmable thermostat so you can lower your heating cost. Find out if they have community education programs for saving and investing money in your area; these courses are usually very cheap for the info they give you. Checking the frugal websites out for ways to save is another option. Buy your gas early in the morning or late a night because this is when gas is the densest and you get more vroom for your money.
