Phinehas is a name for two different characters mention in the Hebrew Bible. One of them was the grandson of Aaron and the son of Eleazar, the high priest. He was a youth who rallied with zeal and valour against the Heresy of Peor where it is believed that the Moabites and Midianites tried to tempt people in idol worship and sexual immorality in which they achieved success to an extent. Phinehas tried to redeem the situation and hence was acknowledged by god to receive divine recognition and was appointed to lead hereditary priesthood.
The other Phinehas mentioned in Bible was the son of the High Priest, Eli. He was considered evil and was believed to have indulged in illicit behaviour like marking out the best portion of sacrifices for himself and having sexual relations with the women in the sanctuary. These acts earned him a curse due to which he died in a battle against the Philistines at Eben-ezer.
