When Did Chippenham Get Market Town Status?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It was during the rule of King John (1199-1216); Chippenham established a market and a fun fair on St. Andrew's Day. It was a settlement, which happened in 1228. In the later years King Edward 2 approved Chippenham two markets and four fairs. However, over a period of time there were different markets formed such as the pig market and cheese market. In 1834, New Hall was developed into a cheese market. These markets gradually moved to a new location at Cocklebury, on 6th may 1951 and the entire market was formed by April 1954.

Today these markets take place on Fridays and Saturdays.  These markets sell almost everything under the sky. The products sold are cheese, cds, mobile phones, underwear, cosmetic, shoes, jewellery, clock, watches, materials, plants and flowers, almost everything.
