When Was Grimsby Town Football Club Founded?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Grimsby Town Football Club was founded in 1878 after talks that were held in the Wellington Arms pub.

As was popular with many cricket teams towards the end of the 19th century, the Worsley Cricket Club decided to play football during the winter months to keep up their physical fitness levels so that they would be ready to return to cricket the following year.
The club that they formed was originally called the Grimsby Pelham in recognition of a the family name of the landowner in the area named the Earl of Yarborough. However, the name was changed to Grimsby Town in 1879.

The club joined the Football League in 1892, although the early 1900s saw them fall out of the league to join the Midland League, but they were quickly promoted back up.

Grimsby Town currently play in League Two and finished in an impressive 4th place during the 2005/06 season.
