Do The Harry Potter Books Have To Be Read In Order?

Answer Question

Although enjoyed individually, it is advisable to read the Harry Potter books in order. Reading them in a different order may be prove to be confusing, particularly with the later books.

For your reference, here is the correct order of the books in the series so far:

1.Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorceror's Stone in the U.S.)
    2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
    3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
    4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
    5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
    6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

In the earlier books, J.K. Rowling will often explain events that have happened previously in order to give the reader a re-cap. For example, in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Rowling helps to jog the reader's memory by stating that Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, who are both introduced in Philosopher's Stone, are Harry's best friends.

However, in the later books, previous events aren't explained as much, and the plot becomes more deep with lots of twists, meaning that previous books may need to be read in order to fully understand the storyline.

Also, some characters may not be re-introduced. For example, the character Mrs. Norris is a cat, and this is only explained in earlier books, meaning that if you read the later books first, you could easily mistake Mrs. Norris for a person and not an animal.

Yes, I would advise you to read all the harry potter books in order, or else you really won't understand the books. A lot people say their long books but once you get to book 3 you'll really like those books. I'm on book 6 in the Harry Potter series. If i were you, I would read those books.

        Yes! yes! yes! defiantly!

A lot of ppl picked up the last book deathly hallows and read it and obviously they're are left clueless!! defiantly read  in order because all of it is linked in more than the obvious way, every thing adds up at the end!

I am totally obsessed with the books having grown up with them, and they're amazing and i admire jk so much for having thought up such an incredible tale!

Would you ever see Part 2 of something before you see Part 1?  I'm the kind of person who likes to keep things in order, so it is my opinion that you will get the most out of the Harry Potter phenomenon if you read them in order....later books refer back to things in the early books.

As a reading aide in an elementary, I would have to say that reading them in order will be less confusing (each book introduces new people and problems) I personally would not consider reading Harry Potter out of order.

Let's say it's one story divided in 7 books. So yes, you should read them in order, else you won't get the story and reading will be less enjoyable.

I think that you have to read the books in order.  New Characters are introduced in each book, and they usually reappear in the later books, so if you start at the middle or end of the series, you will have no idea who a lot of characters are.  Also, each book starts where the last one left off, so if you don't read the previous one, the story might not make sense to you.

Reading them out of order would make little sense.  Many people think that if they watch the movie then they can skip that book because they already know what's going to happen but what they don't understand is that the movies are nothing like the book.  There are more characters, more plots, and certain things don't in the movies are actually done by different people in the books.  Like how dobby's acts in the book always go to Neville in the movies (i hate that).  My friend tried just reading the last two books and got all confused because she only watched the movies.  Plus they're better in order anyway.

Books like Harry Potter are like novels, if u read the last part of novels you will create questions in ur mind, not like when u read from the beginning. You will enjoy, as if you are the one accompanying the main character^^(wow!! I like it heheheheh)

So, Read from the beginning.. ^^ so you can appreciate and understand the whole story ^^ (love it ) ^^

It's a good idea to read any series of books in order, they seem to make more sense that way.
