What Is Biodiversity?

Answer Question

This is an excellent question!  Biodiversity relates to the diversity of organisms within an ecosystem.  It is a measure of how many different kinds organisms can be found in a given ecosystem.

For example: An intertidal zone can have tremendous biodiversity, for in it can be found several different seaweeds and kelps, plankton, grasses, snails, crustaceans, barnacles, bivalves (clams, mussels, quohogs), several kinds of shorebirds that feed on these animals, etc.  So you see, you have several species from plants and algaes, all the way up to predatory birds.

The diversity in species, genes and ecosystems in a specific region. This region can differ from something very small like your room or neighborhood to the entire earth. Biodiversity is often a measurement for the health of the region. Usually it's the more diverse the life is in the region the healthier.
