How Can I Get An Unsecured Credit Card To Build Up My Credit Rating?

Answer Question

If you have a checking and/or savings account with a balance sufficient to "secure" the credit card, you can apply for one at the same bank the accounts are held at.  I believe a minimum balance of $500 is required.  This way, if you default on the credit card, the balance in your account will cover it.  After 6-12 months of paying balance on time, you might be eligible for an unsecured card.  Check with your bank on their requirements.  Be careful to read fine print and know what you are responsible for.  Also the interest rate you will be paying.  Make sure you are not getting in over your head or this could harm your credit.  Another option for you might be a gas credit card like Shell or Exxon.  Be sure to pay it off in full each month for maximum benefit to your credit report.
