It is the name of five princes of Orange-Nassau, including William I (known as William the Silent), and William III (who is also known as William III if England, Wiiliam III of Ireland and William II of Scotland). It is also the name used to refer to Saint William of Gellone, the legendary courtier of Charlemagne who defeated the Saracens at Orange and also William, Bishop of Orange, who succeeded Adhemar of Le Puy as the leader of the clergy after Adhemar's death, until his own demise in December 1098.

It is the name of five princes of the kingdom of Orange, including four princes named William of Baux and one named William of Chalon. The heir apparent to the Dutch throne, Queen Beatrix's son, Crown Prince William Alexander will be called William IV of the Netherlands upon his accession to the Dutch throne.
