Cats need stimulation just like every creature. They need indoor places to scratch their claws, dangling strings and things to bat at, and sometimes something to run after or chase. Cats are hunters and they have an instinct to chase or capture something smaller. A ball or a small toy like a rubber mouse can help them satisfy this need. A simple dangling string on a baton can be purchased at most pet stores and places where pet items are sold. Scratching pads can be set up in the home.
Many pet adoption centers recommend that a person adopt two cats at once. Two cats can entertain and stimulate one another, and provide social interaction for one another. They have an instinct to clean and groom each other and play together. However, some cat pairs do not work; the cats are uncomfortable together. A "trial period" is often recommended.
Cats will naturally use a litter box if they are shown and told to. They have an instinct to bury their droppings. Two cats can share a litter box, but a multiple-cat home needs a larger box.
