No self-build project is ever easy. If you truly plan to build the house using your own labour then consider what skills you already possess and which you can acquire reasonably quickly. If you are a joiner by trade then choosing a timber framed house makes sense as wood is a material you know how to work with. No brickie ever learned their craft in a day so if bricklaying is going to be vital for all or part of the walls you will have to learn how to lay bricks. Modern bricks are of a consistent size but every course laid can be come uneven if excessive or too little mortar is used. It might actually be quicker to get to grips with more unusual techniques. For example, straw bale houses have been built successfully by amateurs. A modern version of this using huge polystyrene type blocks has also emerged as an interesting option for self-build projects. Remember that along with the practical skills of getting your materials in the right place is the knowledge required to meet modern building regulations. For example, although it is still legal for an unqualified person to install a whole electrical system from scratch this work has to be inspected by local authority building inspectors.
