    In terms of a bridge, a span means a horizontal structure made to allow people and vehicles to cross over a hurdle like a canal, a network of railway tracks or a river.

    There are different parts in a span viz;

    1. arch — a  curved masonry construction for spanning an opening and holding up the weight above it.
    2. trestle- a tower for supporting the bridge
    3. pier-a support for two adjoining bridges.

    A cantilever span is a bridge made of two cantilevers that merge in the middle.  A footbridge or an overcrossing span is a bridge built for people to walk over.  A steel arch bridge is a span made in the form of an arch. A lift span or lift bridge is a bridge built to block the movement or allow the ships and boats to pass under it.
