The amazing dome on top of St. Peter's magnificent church in Christendom was designed by the great Michelangelo. Michelangelo ~ real name, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on March 6th 1475 and was an Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect and poet. He was a very talented chap and two of his best-known works were the sculptures, Pieta and the David, which he did when he was in his late twenties to his early thirties.
Although Michelangelo had a low opinion of painting, he created the most influential paintings in history ~ The Last Judgement of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. It wasn't until later in his life that Michelangelo designed the dome of St' Peter's Basilicia in the very same city. It has been said that Michelangelo revolutionised classical architecture and many artists and sculptures still used his work as inspiration today.
Michelangelo died at the grand old age of 89 in 1564.
