Depending on where you are in Alabama, you may be able to contact your local Legal Aid office and ask them for advice on that. I am an attorney in NC so I can't advise on Alabama law, but I know that there is a Legal Services Corporation in every state available to low income applicants. I do not know if you are low income or not, but could at least call to see if you qualify and if so, if they can give you advice on the law there. I can provide a weblink for you to go to to find the Legal Aid office closest to you in Alabama. It is: www.lsc.gov. You click on the find legal help button on the top right and it will show you a map of the US. You click on your state and you'll see some funding information but as you scroll down you will see the local office information. It appears that there is only one office for the entire state of Alabama! They have a website also at www.LegalServicesAlabama.org  I have not visited their site, but I know that many agencies like this post tenant rights and law on their site to help educate the public, so you might even be able to find out the information you want from the website. I hope that helps some.
