Can You Give Me A General Idea On Hosting A Web Site?

Please elaborate...But here is some general answer:

If you have a smaller web site you are best off by buying some affordable shared hosting service (e.g. www.ecorso.com where I host my sites). Companies like that operate one or more highly available, powerful server systems that are directly connected to the internet with 100 or 1000 MBit both directions, perform daily backups, maintain the server and so on. Short: their administrators make sure everything works and is updated and safe and secure and highly available with high performance. So you don't have to do all that work and don't have to pay for the expensive computers, internet lines, backup systems, battery backups, High security IT rooms, Administrators...

In return you pay a small monthly or annual fee to them so they take care of that for you.
They will also give you part of their computing power and hard disc space where you can place your web site.

If you are a (X)HTML/CSS/JavaScript/PHP/MySQL programmer, you can write your web site yourself and upload the resulting files to your web server via FTP/SSH.

However, if you are no programmer but want a quick, maintainable web site without worrying too much about technology, you ask your hosting firm for a content management system (CMS). For instance, at the company mentioned above I use CMSimple for very small sites, Joomla! for medium sites and Typo3 for large sites. Their server is set up for all three so I just tell them what I want and they make sure it's there, they even install the system so all I have to do is put my content in there.
