Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are said to have assiduously cultivated their relationships with John Edwards after he dropped out of the race. Edwards was respectful to both but, in the end, did not explicitly endorse either candidate.
Many people found Edwards' conduct rather strange, both in the way he dropped out of the race and then failed to endorse anyone explicitly afterwards. The explanation may perhaps lie in the scandal which erupted some months later over the affair Edwards had with one of his campaign's employees. It may be that he had an early inkling that the story was going to come out and did not want to damage either Democratic candidate by association.
