The ECT or Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor in a 2000 Grand Cherokee Jeep is located on the housing of the thermostat. Check on the thermostat housing and you will find it there. The ECT is basically there to respond to changes that occur in the engine's temperature. The ECT does this by measuring the engines coolant temperature and so figures out the temperature of the engine. In almost all vehicles the ECT is situated in the coolant passage near the beginning of the thermostat. The ECT is connected to the terminal of the THW on the ECM or Engine Control Module. The different ECM functions such as ignition timing, fuel injection, transmission shifting and variable vale timing all critically depend for proper functioning on the ECT.
