    She should have English, maths and at least one science at GCSE. A scientific background is usually expected for a career as a vet, so she should think about A level in chemistry and biology as well as, ideally, a third science subject. There is a lot of competition for the best veterinary college places, so good grades at A level are needed; for more exact information, you would need to ask the institution where she wants to study, as requirements do change. As well as school grades, they like to see evidence of experience in working with animals.

    A Bachelor in Veterinary Medicine (BVetMed) takes 5 years, though there are accelerated courses for people who already have a degree in a science subject. A good place to start looking for more information is the Royal Veterinary College website at
