Which Snakes Are The Smallest In The World?
Answers
Thread snakes are the smallest snakes in the world; they are very thin with long slender bodies that can be between 8 and 40 centimetres long. There are 78 species of thread snakes and they usually live in the very dry conditions in Africa and Arabia but there are a few in America, in the southern states and down across Mexico into Argentina.
The Texas blind snake is a species of thread snake that lives in the American south west. They like arid conditions but tend to live at the bottom of canyons where the subsoil is just a bit damp, so that they can retreat underground if necessary. The snake looks pink because it has relatively little pigment in its skin but it can also appear purplish brown with a silver sheen.
The thread snakes are carnivores but they can only manage small prey – termites and ants are their main source of food.
