    The word flange is used to refer either to an external rib or an internal rib or a rim (or a lip). A flange provides extra strength to the external rib or the internal rib or the rim (or the lip). An example of a flange is an iron beam or an I-beam.

    A flange pipe is defined as a pipe which has a flange at one of its ends. The flange is either in the form of a plate or a ring which is at the end of the pipe. It is fastened to the pipe. An example of a flange pipe is a closet flange.

    A blind flange is defined as a plate which is used either for the purpose of covering or for the purpose of closing the end of a pipe. A flange joint is defined as a connection of pipes. The connecting pieces of the pipe have flanges, which are used to bolt the parts of the pipe together.
