CD is the name given to a storage device called Compact Disc. A CD was developed by the electronics giants Sony and Philips primarily for the purpose of storing Audio in digital form. It was launched in the year 1982. CD's have a capacity of approximately 700 MB. They are available in different diameters from 60 mm to 80 mm.

On the other hand DVD is the name for Digital Video Disc or Digital Versatile Disc. A DVD is mostly used for both video and data storage. The main different between a DVD and CD is the amount of data they store. A DVD can hold up to six times data than a CD.

A DVD can store up to 17.08 GB of data on its surface which is much more than the capacity of a CD. Both the DVD's and CD's are available in readable and rewritable formats. In readable form they can only be burned once and the data on it can never be changed. Whereas on a rewritable form, it can be edited by choice.
