The antitrust laws were intended to prevent large corporations from forming monopolies through the use of trusts. This "restraint of trade" was a way of preventing ordinary tradepeople from making a living for themselves. Monopolies can dictate prices and the quality of good because their products cannot be obtained from other sources. They have no competition, and that puts consumers at the mercy of the monopolies.
