    The term barrier reef is simply a combination of two words and the meaning it conveys is also not some thing else but only the collective meaning of the two words.
         
    Barrier is something that halts the progress of some thing and reef is simply coral reef. So when reef work as a barrier it can be attributed with the term the 'barrier reef'. You can find a barrier reef running parallel to the shore and certainly close to it.
         
    The 'Great Barrier Reef' is one of the most well-known coral reef systems in the world and also the largest. It is situated in the Coral Sea at the coast of Queensland in the northern part of Australia. The reef system stretches approximately two thousand six hundred kilometres and has nine hundred islands in it that give the coral reef system an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres.
