In the 1976 film, teacher Sidney Poitier plays a teacher in a rough comprehensive school who overcomes racial prejudice and other obstacles to win the love and respect of his pupils. In "Please Sir!" John Alderton plays Bernard Hedges, a teacher in a rough inner-city school (Fenn Street) who battles to win a semblance of civilised behaviour from his delinquent class, 5c. In 1970 most of the cast went on to appear in "The Fenn Street Gang" which followed their adventures after leaving school. (By this time the actors looked much to old to be at school anyway.) In 1971 the show was made into a popular film, with Bernard and his child-hating colleagues Potter (Derek Guyler) and Doris Ewell (Joan Sanderson) taking 5c on an ill-fated camping trip in the depths of the countryside.
"Please Sir!" was scripted by John Esmonde and Bob Larbey, and was their first major project.
