Mount St Helens in Washington State, USA, began to erupt at 8.32 am on Sunday, 18 May, 1980.
The volcano had been giving signs of activity for some weeks, so early warnning systems were in place and a large number of people were evacuated. Even so, at least 60 people were killed by the eruption, which went on for 9 hours.
The eruption was followed by two weeks of high level activity. The area is now a national park and education centre; it is used to observe the continuing activity of the volcano and to learn more about volcanoes in general. The Mount St Helens website at fed.us/gpn can give more details as well as a virtual tour of the area.
