Why Was Tuileries Built?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Tuileries was a palace and royal residences built for Catherine de Medicis. The palace was constructed in the year 1564 by Philbert Delorme and occupied a part of the present Tuileries garden.

Tuileries was not used as a royal residence until the year 1789, when revolutionists forced LouisXVI to shift there from Versailles. In the year 1792, when a mob attacked the palace of Napoleon I, he made the Tuileries his main residence. After this, Kings like Louis XVIII, Louis Philippe, Charles X and Napoleon III began to make Tuileries their homes. During the commune of Paris in the year 1871, the palace was gutted down by arson. The beautiful former gardens laid out by the Le Notre remain and are linked to the Louvre museum.
