How Are Cactus Grown?

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

For the plant owner who is stricken with amnesia when it comes to watering, the cactus is ideal.  The plant can survive without water for long periods. The cactus plant is easy to care for and many people think that it is every bit as interesting to look at as the delicate orchid.  It is a myth that cacti grow in desserts. They grow in arid semi-deserts, where there are small amounts of rainfall.  Almost all varieties originate from North and South America. In most types, once the plant reaches a flowering stage, it will flower at least once a year if it is well maintained. Cacti can be grown from seeds or cuttings, but perhaps the easiest way to grow them is to buy seedlings from a nursery. Often shops sell sets of several different kinds of cacti seedlings for a reasonable price.

In the UK, the plants grow best in a container, so that they can be moved when conditions outside are not ideal. When potting the plants, it's important to use a free-draining compost. Mixing the compost with horticultural grit is also helpful.  Keeping the plants in a pot that is just big enough for them will encourage growth. Most cacti only need watering in the spring and summer; this is their growing season. They should be watered once a week if they are kept in a greenhouse and once a fortnight if they are indoors.  Cacti love the sun, of course, so the sunniest spot possible is an ideal place to keep them.  In the UK, it's best to bring them inside during the winter. If they are in a greenhouse, it may be necessary to provide a source of heat during the coldest months.
