Did Jimmy Rimmer Play For Man Utd?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Yes, he did. He was on the bench for United the night they won the European Cup against Benfica at Wembley in 1968. He was at Old Trafford for eleven years, but made few appearances due to the consistency and greater experience of Alex Stepney. After a loan spell at Swansea City, Jimmy moved to Arsenal, for whom he played from 1974 to 1977, missing only one league game. When Gunners manager Terry Neill signed Pat Jennings from local rivals Tottenham, Jimmy moved on again, this time to Aston Villa. It was with Villa that he enjoyed his greatest successes, being ever-present in the 1980/81 season as the club won the League Championship. He was ever-present the following year too, as they won the European Cup, though was substituted due to injury after nine minutes of the Final against Bayern Munich. This meant that Jimmy had won two European Cup winners' medals (1968 and 1982) but had spent a total of only nine minutes on the pitch! After being Villa's first-team goalkeeper for six seasons, Jimmy left in 1983 to finish his league career at Swansea City, for whom he'd appeared on loan in the early 1970s. Jimmy won one England cap, in 1976, and is widely regarded to be Aston Villa's greatest ever goalkeeper.
