What Does The Sikh Surname 'Singh' Mean?

The word 'Singh' can trace its derivation to Sanskrit where it conveys the idea of a lion and the name was given to the people who belong to Sikh sect by their tenth guru Gobind Singh. The guru also gave a surname to the female followers of Sikhism and they are known to the world as Kaur and convey the idea of a princess.
       
The reason behind the use of the name Singh as such is that he established the religion to protect people without discriminating about their caste and creed and he also wanted to establish a similar name to all the people so that the caste bar can be wiped out from his religion.
