When stretch marks first appear they are purple or reddish lines. However they fade with age and eventually turn silver in color. The areas of the skin affected look empty and are soft to touch.

When searching for stretch marks treatment to heal stretch marks, it's important to know that the layer of skin that needs to be treated actually has three layers, the epidermis which is the top layer, the dermis or middle layer and the subcutaneous stratum, which is the inner layer. The dermis is responsible for helping skin keep its shape. When the skin is stretched over a period of time, it becomes less elastic, so that the dermis loses its support causing dermal and epidermal tearing, what we call stretch marks. And there is a stretch marks cream that works extremely well for this.

The best course of action is to avoid getting them in the first place, if possible. Stretch marks have two primary causes: Physical and hormonal. Stretch marks can be caused by extreme stretching of the skin, which keeps the skin from returning to its original condition. This extreme stretching is commonly the result of gaining large amounts of weight in a short period of time. Bodybuilders, pregnant women, and adolescents that have been through rapid growth spurts, often develop stretch marks. Stretch marks can also result from hormonal issues like continual steroid use or Cushing's syndrome. Some stretch marks result from both the physical stretching and the hormones.

The best way is to rub baby oils or vitamin E lotions on your body (or areas you plan on expanding from child birth or body building) prior to getting bigger and during.  Once you have them, its difficult to get rid of them but you can reduce the severity by keeping your skin moist via lotions and oils. Age is also a factor that decides how bad you get them.
