Sarajevo is a unique city in Europe, in that it has a truly diverse mix of Muslims, Orthodox Christian and Roman Catholics and in terms of ethnic backgrounds, there are Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats. The Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s devastated this city of 400,000 residents, leaving both physical and emotional scars. Nevertheless, it is now safe to visit the Bosnian capital and although it is not a major tourist destination for westerners, there are plenty of things to see and discover here.

The first place to visit in Sarajevo is the ancient Turkish quarter, the most evident sign of the city's long Ottoman past. Most people who have visited this area of the city will note that they feel as though they have left Europe, and are perhaps in Istanbul, or somewhere in the Middle-East. This is truly a unique experience. There are several mosques in this area, as well as many market-style stores.

It is also a great idea to visit the Olympic Stadium, built for the 1984 games. Back then, Sarajevo was a diverse, peaceful centre of culture and the arts. In order to truly comprehend how the Yugoslav Wars changed the region, a day trip to nearby Srebrenica might be well worth it for some, where the scars of conflict and genocide are everywhere.
