Who Wrote The Secret Garden?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The wonderful tale about a secret garden at the back of a grand house was the brain-child of Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett. Frances was well-known as an American writer. She was born in Manchester in England on November 24th, 1849. When she was sixteen years old, Frances and her parents moved to the USA in 1865 and eight years later she married Dr Burnett. The marriage to the doctor however did not work out in the long term and Frances divorced the doctor in 1898.
Frances Hodgson Burnet was equally at home describing the people of Lancashire that she had known in her youth as she was at portraying the Americans. Her greatest success was the well-known tale of Little Lord Fauntleroy who she based on her son Vivian. His velvet suit, as worn by Fauntleroy, soon became a big fashion statement.
The Little Princess was another of Frances' popular children's books and The Secret Garden and Little Lord Fauntleroy have both been turned into Hollywood films. Frances died at the age of 75 on October 29th, 1924.
