When Did The Ashes Start?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In 1882, Australia beat England at the Oval, the first time this had happened on English soil. The Sporting Times published an obituary, stating that English cricket had died and 'the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia'. The English press then dubbed the next English tour to Australia, in the winter of 1882/3 (summer in Australia, of course!), as the 'Quest to regain the Ashes'.
