I am trying to help my child with homework. I've been out of school for a long time and they have changed what they called things when I was in school.

    A linear equation is an algebraic equation in which each term is either a constant or the product of constant times the first power of a variable. This equation is equivalent to equating a first-degree polynomial to zero. These are called "linear" because they represent straight lines in Cartesian coordinates. A common form of the linear equation in the two variables x and y is
    y = mx + b

      An equation involving variables having maximum power equal to  "1".
      Or
      An equation having a degree equal to "1".
