This controversial club started out with the name of Milton Keynes Dons FC in 2004. However it was previously founded as Wimbledon Old Centrals FC in 1889 and later became Wimbledon FC.

Milton Keynes is a relatively new town and was built in 1967. An entrepreneur named Winkelman based in the area wanted to promote a top-class football team. Rather than invest in non-league teams, he sought existing struggling teams from London or Middlesex to relocate to Milton Keynes.

Wimbledon FC were struggling financially and had been looking for a new location for some time as it had been ground-sharing with Crystal Palace since 1992. They were the ideal candidate for Winkelman's venture.

Wimbledon FC moved to Milton Keynes in 2004 but Winkelman changed their name to Milton Keynes Dons. The 'Dons was the previous nickname of Wimbledon FC.

Sadly most of the original Wimbledon fans have deserted the Milton Keynes Dons and have started their own team named AFC Wimbledon, founded in 2002.

Milton Keynes Dons currently play in the League Two division after being relegated from League One at the end of the 2005/06 season.

Incorrect on many counts. MK Dons Founded 2004. They have no history prior to this and have agreed by returning everything associated with Wimbledon FC to the Borough of Merton. Wimbledon FC did not struggle financially until the decision to move was finalised. 99% of the Supporters of Wimbledon FC refused to watch football 70 miles from the community that founded their club. AFC Wimbledon in order to continue football in their community. How can you desert a club you've never been part of?
