There is no perfect recipe for the successful screenplay. There are rules about films that need to be learned to maximise your chances of writing a screenplay that stands a chance of being made into a film. You should always be clear about who your characters are and what motivates them to behave as they do. You should know what genre of film (e.g. a Western, a romance) you are writing. Each genre will have some specific rules which can help you develop a plot which helps you tell a satisfying story. Make sure you structure your story into at least three acts and make sure each act is pacy and engaging. Rules on genre and script structure are often broken but an aspiring screenplay should try writing by the rules first. Think about attaching talent to your film. Famous name actors and directors can fast track scripts. Keep writing. Never stop and keep learning. Find an agent by sending samples of your work and be prepared to rewrite again and again until you have achieved perfection.
