High levels of estrogen in birth control pills will cause water retention, and thus weight gain. However, it is also possible to take pills with lower estrogen levels to avoid this. The weight gain ranges between women, but is about 5 pounds on average. It is recommended you talk to a doctor before starting birth control of any kind as they will then ensure you take a pill that suits your body best.

That depends on the type of birth control you're taking. Most pills don't make you gain any weight but i have heard from girls who have taken it that Yaz makes you gain almost 20 lbs. The shot makes you gain a lot as well as the patch.
