Anwar ul Sadat was an Egyptian president from 1970 to 1981 who worked toward peace in the Middle East, in the course of which he became the first Arab leader to recognize Israel.
Sadat was born into a poor family on December 25, 1918. He joined the military academy, where he joined Gamal Abdel Nasser in conspiring against the British-dominated Egyptian monarchy.

During the World War 11 he was jailed two times for contact with Germans. He was tried for trying to assassinate a pro-British politician in 1946 but was acquitted. Sadat took part in the 1952 coup which ousted King Faruk and installed Nasser in power.
He was elected the country's president after Nasser's death in 1970. Reeling after the defeat by Israel in the Six-Day War of 1967, he built up his military from scratch and launched the Arab-Israel war in October 1973. The Egyptian army broke through Israel's defence and penetrated Israeli-occupied territory.

.Sadat later established close ties with the United States. In 1977 Sadat invited Arab criticism by traveling to Jerusalem. That initiative led to a peace treaty with Israel, signed in March 1979, as a result of which Israel withdrew from the entire Sinai Peninsula. Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin were jointly awarded the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize. Sadat was assassinated by a group of religious extremists on October 6, 1981.
