The registration of births became compulsory in England and Wales in the September Quarter of 1837. However, many people chose not to register their childrens birth for a few years after this date, therefore the earlier records are not a complete record of all births which took place in England and Wales.

Birth certificates contained detailsof when and where the child was born, the registration district, the sub- district ( e.g. Registration District Liverpool, sub-district Litherland) and the County.

The name of the child (if any ), sex of child; name and surname of father; name, surname and maiden surname of mother; occupation of father; signature, description and residence of informant, date of registration of birth ; signature of registrar, name entered after registration ( if applicable).

When researching family history it is often essential to obtain birth certificates in order to step back another generation if the names of the child's parents are not known.
