Short stories can be difficult to tackle as you are squeezing a beginning, middle and end into 1,000 words or so. Also, there is very little time for character development.

Try to make your short story original. If it is original, then people will enjoy it. Think about whether or not you want your short story to contain a twist at the end or not. Try not to make your story too predictable, as that will disappoint the reader.

As you have very little time to develop a proper plot in a short story, it is a good idea to go straight into the action. Have a look at some other short stories to get an idea of how the author begins their story, how they tackle the middle of the story, and how they wrap the story up at the end. Roald Dahl's short stories are particularly good, as they provoke thought within the reader.

Give your short story theme, and stick to it throughout the story. Think about what audience you would like to aim your story at.

Try to make your story understandable. Avoid creating a story that will leave the reader confused and unsatisfied. Suspense is good, but avoid making your story too open-ended.
