OK sure it's a place, though the word itself means "half". People say it means so so, as in "how are you?" "mezzo mezzo". This is common but incorrect, if you want to say, so so in Italian it's "cosi cosi". If you answer "mezzo mezzo" in Italy I can guarantee people will look around to figure out what exactly it is you're cutting.
