Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The word "their" is an adjective and it is also a possessive form of the word "they". It is spelt as "t-h-e-i-r". The word is used as a modifier in front of a noun. It is taken from the Middle English and derived from the Old Norse word "theira" meaning "theirs". The word "their" is used in the collective sense to refer to something as being related to or belonging to some people or entities, for instance: their faces, their peace, their stupidity. The word their can be defined as implying the meaning "done by them" or "of them". It is used not just for people but also for nations, companies, animals etc.

Examples of its uses include "the cows ate their fodder", "the men shook their heads in disbelief" and "the member nations sent their respective representatives" etc.

This is a word frequently misused.  The way you spelled it, it is a possessive adjective.  The other spelling of the word is "there' , and it used for such thing as "There are for quarters in a dollar.", or "The store is over there."  Just try to remember that "their" is always used to indicate possession or ownership.
